End of an Era

I felt a sense of nostalgia and sadness yesterday morning when I was completing my officiating as an I.O.T [Inspector of Turns]. This was probably my last session as an official in a sport that has provided so much for our girls. Not only have they had the opportunity to compete in swimming but they have gained many fitness benefits and enjoyed the social contact with like minded children.

I took some photos at Kilbirnie Pool that show how much swimming relies on parent involvement. Swimming requires timekeepers, I.O.T's, Race Referees, Judges of Stroke, Starters, Announcers, Refreshment Assistants, Medal Bearers, Computer Programmers and others!

Swimmers awaiting Starter's Signal! Behind the swimmers are the time-keepers and I.O.T's!

Judge of Strokes follow the swimmers along the pool.

The I.O.T's are checking swimmer's turns are in accordance with the correct protocol.

Looks like I will need to get myself involved more in running and biking circles as they are two of my main interests in the sporting arena.

What does an inspector of turns and judge of strokes do??

I bet it is a bit bittersweet actually. More time to spend on the activities you love, but swimming's been a part of your life for so long, that you will probably miss it a little bit!
